 <ABSTRACT>On Nov 15, 1950, Sampson Naval Training Center was redesignated to   Sampson Air  Force Base. (AFB) The base was named after Rear Admiral Richard Thomas   Sampson.  Col. Frederick W. Ott assumed command on Dec 11, 1950. Maj. Gen. Frank   A.  Armstrong succeeded Col. Frederick W. Ott on Jan 16, 1951. The first   trainees   arrived  on Feb 1, 1951. Mission: to provide formal basic training for all male   and  female enlisted personnel not having sufficient previous military   training; to  establish and operate such assembly, processing and separation station   as   specifically  directed; to provide a comprehensive counseling program for Basic   Indoctrinee  personnel in order that these airmen may be most effectively assigned   in  accordance with Air Force requirements; and to maintain training   programs for  accomplishing rehabilitation of garrison prisoners. Discusses the   formation and   activation  of the base and subordinate units. The 3650 Air Force Indoctrination   Wing was  activated on Dec 10, 1950, at Sampson AFB Ga. Aircraft assigned to   base: B-25  Aircraft; C-47 Aircraft; and C-45 Aircraft.</ABSTRACT>
